Covering MIP since 1981 as a journalist has of course filled my memory with numerous star moments. Muhammed Ali, Raymon Burr, Robert Redford; the list is long. My favorite star moment is my two meetings with soccer star Pelé. I was 12 years old when my father took me to see the World Cup final in my home town Stockholm. The year was 1958 and Sweden played against Brasil. That tournament saw the break through of the 18 years old Pelé and all kids on the block were Pelé, Vava or Garrincha that summer.
More than 25 years later I met Pelé at MIP-TV in Cannes. I presented myself , told him I was from Sweden and that I had seen the big final in 1958. We talked about football and a photo of us was taken.
Almost ten years later, in the early 90´s it was announced that Pelé was among the forthcoming stars to MIP. I found the old photo and packed it for the trip. Pelé had a press conference and I found my way up to him afterwards, with my photo in one hand and a black pencil in the other for him to sign with. He took my photo, looked at it and then looked at me and smiled: ”You´re from Sweden”, he said, ”and you saw the game!” and then signed it ”Good luck. Pelé”. And I was 12 years old again.
