Understanding how much business is done at a TV market is never easy. For many years, a handful of senior US Studio executives from three of the majors were kind enough to meet with a junior reporter from Variety, at the end of the show and estimate the amount of their sales.
One day, the three execs were all sitting together on the Paramount booth, cigars lit and clearly in end-of-market mode. I asked them what they felt about MIPTV and how much business they had done. Then, out of left field I asked them how they estimated the amount. “That’s easy,” they replied. “We ask you how much XXX (a rival studio sales chief) says he’s done and we add $10 million.”
